Advice for keeping your fundraising legal and safe

We want everything to go well when you choose to fundraise for Schnauzerfest. Your event will be in aid of Schnauzerfest so it’s your responsibility to keep it legal and safe. But we’re here to support you! You should find everything you need here, but we know there may be things you’d like to chat over. We’re always happy to hear from our fundraisers, in fact we want to hear from you, so do get in touch.

As long as it’s safe and legal you can do whatever you fancy to fundraise for Schnauzerfest!

collections

If on private property you’ll need written permission from the owner and have it with you when you’re collecting. On public land, collections require a local council licence, or in London, one from the Metrpolitan Police.

If you prefer to avoid getting a licence for collecting money, do all your fundraising online. You can hand out cards (download a simple version here) on which you give the link to your fundraising page, or the Schnauzerfest website where donations can be made. This also means that Gift Aid can be claimed on donations if people do it themselves online (you can’t claim on behalf of others).

Collection containers must display our logo so people know it is Schnauzerfest that you are raising money for. We can provide you with your own special ‘In Aid of Schnauzerfest’ logo, email us and we’ll send.

insurance

When you’re organising and running your event in aid of Schnauzerfest everyone needs to be safe and this is your responsibility. Depending on the event you are organising, you may need to arrange Public Liability Insurance. This can be obtained inexpensively. Schnauzerfest does not have any liability even when the event is run to raise money for the charity. Your event won’t be covered by Schnauzerfest’s insurance. But, for a lot of things people do to fundraise, insurance won’t be needed.

Check if the venue for your event requires any insurance, or provides it. When hiring a venue it is often included in the fee, but check this out with the venue. For private events, you may decide that insurance is not necessary, if unsure, getting free advice from an insurance provider is always an option.

raffles & prize draws

These are a great way to raise funds but they are covered by gambling law. If you need any help, do get in touch, or have a read here to ensure you stay legal.

Logo use & promotional Material

When marketing your event, whether it is digitally, online, or physical materials, please use our specific ‘In Aid Of Schnauzerfest’ logo which we will supply when you tell us about your event. Specific permission to use a Schnauzerfest logo is required. Also, include the words: Schnauzerfest is a registered charity in England & Wales, No. 1185975.

risk assessments

Depending on what your event is, you may decide that a risk assessment is a good idea. Doing this allows you to identify any hazards and steps you need to take, to keep your event safe.

If you are fundraising in aid of Schnauzerfest by running a dog walk, we are very happy to chat over this with you. The Schnauzerfest team are experienced at fundraising this way, it’s how Schnauzerfest began. Do get in touch anytime.

Please remember that as the organiser, you must take all necessary steps to keep your event safe and legal for all involved.

data

Take care with how you collect and keep any details about people involved in your event. You must make sure you comply with data protection law (GDPR).

Please consider:

  • Do not collect information that you don’t need.

  • Do not keep information about people any longer than you have to.

  • Never share information about someone without their permission.

  • If you are on social media, ask people to follow you to save you collecting or holding any details.

  • Make people’s privacy a priority

More guidance can be found on in the ICO website.

Remember, it’s your responsibility to ensure your fundraising event runs safely and lawfully. Spending some time now in preparation and understanding what’s important, will help everything run smoothly. As well as all this, it’s most important to enjoy the fundraising you do in aid of Schnauzerfest!
