At 5 months old Sam is facing an uncertain future. He was born with a congenital heart problem, which if left untreated will severely limit his quality of life and end it prematurely. The first specialist who Sam was referred to did not consider surgery to be an option but sought a second expert opinion and after reviewing the scans and all available information, it was decided that Sam is indeed a candidate for surgery.
This is not without risk. It is a major and complex procedure and success is not guaranteed. However, on balance, Sam’s carers and veterinary team have decided to give him this shot at living a healthy life. Fundraising has raised a significant portion of the money required for the treatment and a Schnauzerfest Grant is in place to cover the outstanding amount.
The operation is scheduled for early September. In the meantime, Sam is enjoying life with his foster family and friends who are dedicated to offering this little chap the very happiest of times, against his bad start in life.
November update
Sam’s heart surgery went ahead in October. His carers prepared him well and he went into it as fit and healthy as possible. The surgery was complex as expected, and while it went well, uncertainty remains long-term as during the operation another congenital defect, a Ventricular Septal Defect — a hole in Sam’s heart - was found.
Further surgery may be needed.
BUT for now he’s doing well and that is the most important thing. His quality of life is great, and in a few months time, more will be known about his condition.
Thank you for your generous donations which are contributed to the costs of Sam’s specialist treatment.
