Wispa

Three year old Wispa is a cutie with a very waggy tail despite only recently being taken out of a puppy farm. She is currently being cared for at the Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre, with the experienced team there.

She has problems with her back legs, with one stifle worse than the other. Surgery is a possibility - which will be costly but if it’s recommended, donations will support this option. Initial Xrays are being assessed by a specialist and the best course of action will be decided shortly in the interests of her long term future.

She has been spayed and thankfully for this breeding mama, her days of mothering and rearing puppies are well and truly over. Now, the focus is on getting her well, and ready to head off to her new life.

Last week Wispa had surgery on her knee. It was in a bad way following years of neglect in the puppy farm. The operation wasn't straightforward but it was decided it would be the very best chance of giving her a healthy quality of life once she'd recovered. She has not been doing well. The week proved hard for her and there was great concern for her. She then stopped eating.

The worst was feared when her vet team examined her and a blockage was discovered. She was taken in for surgery with the understanding that if the blockage was a tumour, the kindest thing would be to let Wispa pass peacefully.

But, just before the weekend we got the good news that the blockage wasn’t a tumour, it was a massive food blockage. While it's a relief that it wasn't a tumour, the cause isn't yet known and with her background in a puppy farm, there could be any number of reasons for her to have this.

This is why what we do here is so valuable. Supporting a rescue to provide the veterinary care so badly overdue for these dogs really is the best way to change lives. There will always be a lot of unknowns for dogs like Wispa but knowing that Schnauzerfest funds are there for dogs like her, lifts a lot of financial pressure on the rescue.

Wispa was collected by Janet last night and is now recovering in her experienced foster care. This morning she’s feeling pretty perky for a dog who has undergone 2 major operations in under a week.

Wispa is recovering well from her knee surgery and this week began an intensive series of sessions to help build up her strength. For a dog coming from a puppy farm background, muscle weakness is always a problem in their early days of freedom, as well as stamina. For Wispa, she not only has this to contend with, she has had untreated knee problems her entire life, plus the emergency stomach surgery she also had to undergo. But, as is often the case with the dogs who survive in puppy farms long enough to be rescued in time, she has great resilience, and a determination to get on with her life. She’s being a star patient and with the dedication of the DBARC team caring for her, and ensuring she is doing the exercises and physio she requires, Wispa looks set to have a much brighter, fitter 2020 than we feared she would just a week or so ago.

Wispa remains in the care of DBARC and may well stay as a permanent foster case as her health needs continue to give some concern. Her legs are far from perfect and her future mobiity remains unknown and will need careful monitoring. She gets lame if she overdoes things but is doing very well in her foster home and is a happy dog inspite of less than perfect legs!

As a dog who lived in pain in a puppy farm, we’re sure being a permanent foster dog with a human making sure she gets everything she needs is not going to be a bother for Wispa.
