The stories behind dogs coming into rescue are not always known. When they are, sometimes they reveal a turn - or turns - of events which nobody could foresee when a puppy is bought. Bertie’s life story is one of these and we’re telling it with the permission of his first family who had to make the heartbreaking decision to seek help in rehoming their beloved dog.
When Bertie was a puppy in 2019 they were a family of 3, mum, dad and 13 year old son. When we were contacted for assistance, their circumstances had changed significantly. Sadly one parent had died in 2023 and the other’s health had deteriorated more recently. Following a heart attack it became clear that caring for Bertie was proving impossible to do as well as they wanted, and Bertie deserves.
Bertie himself was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2024. He is doing well however, and is generally in good shape, he enjoys his walks and is a happy, sociable dog inspite of everything he and his family have gone through.
We have worked with Dogs Friends Rescue and their fosterer Clare to put arrangements in place for Bertie to be taken under their wing. We are very grateful that they did not hesitate to agree to offer Bertie sanctuary and his family are deeply appreciative,
“It is very reassuring for me and my son to know that he will be in such safe hands. Thank you for making this possible when all other avenues seemed to be closing.
We are very grateful to your organisation. I feel very confident that Clare’s will be an excellent foster home for him and I’m sure he will enjoy being part of a family of other dogs. It is going to be very hard to give him up, but I know in my heart it’s the right thing to do given all the circumstances.
Thank you again for organising all this for me - I am really grateful.
”
A Schnauzerfest Grant will support Clare and Dogs Friends Rescue taking care of Bertie.
