All About Dogs Show, Newbury

Easter weekend saw us join 1000s of others at the All About Dogs Show at Newbury Showground. It was the first event of its kind for Schnauzerfest since we gained registered charity status in October 2019. For a small and novice, volunteer-run charity it was an exciting decision to be part of something like it, and a little daunting.

But we need not have worried, our tiny band of volunteers pulled out all the stops, we got organised in good time and a number of private donors helped us with the costs, easing any financial concerns about taking it on.

The sun shone, the rain stayed away and the crowds came. We talked to everyone who stopped by our stall about puppy farming, the hard work done by rescues and how we support them. A common theme over the two days was how much everyone we chatted to loves their dogs and wishes all dogs to experience this. Lots told us what a big part walking with dogs plays in the happiness of living with dogs. We wholeheartedly agreed with this and were pleased to rally support for our May Schnauzerfest Walks The Globe event.

There were many highlights throughout the weekend. Meeting many wonderful dogs and their people was definitely the biggest. We renewed old friendships and made many new. It was great to be out again connecting in real time after recent years of restrictions and not being able to. Some people came to the stall knowing little, or nothing about Schnauzerfest but leaving a lot wiser and happy to help in future. We met others who regularly fundraise, organise walks or who love being part in one way or another of the work the charity does. One thing was clear, Schnauzerfest is out there in the world, bold and bright and making a difference. Some of the dogs who know this first hand were around over the weekend and it was a great pleasure for everyone to meet them.

As well as raising awareness of rescue work, puppy farming and the terrible toll it takes on dogs, we did also raise money for the charity. People kindly made donations and bought items from the stall. Some pledged to set up regular monthly donations. At a time when things are not at all easy for many people, the generosity shown to Schnauzerfest is greatly appreciated.
