Tilly

When Tilly was adopted she’d received double cataract surgery whilst in rescue. The surgery was a success and Tilly went to live with Heather, an experienced adopter of dogs from troubled backgrounds. Having endured and survived life as a breeding dog in a puppy farm, with little or no eyesight ,Tilly had everything to learn about living in a regular home. Heather would give her all the time, understanding love and care needed.

Tilly slowly learnt to trust that life could be kind and worth living. She made good progress in her first year, gaining confidence. Then a major setback occurred. She suffered a detached retina in her right eye. Nothing could be done to save it and she has been partially sighted since.

Now, seven years on from her adoption, Tilly is battling a further crisis with her eyesight.

I noticed her good eye was sore and weeping. She had developed an ulcer in it. After eight vet visits, with the eye not improving much, even with hourly eye drops, it was decided to stitch her third eyelid over the damaged eye for a couple of weeks to see if that protective procedure would help. She now has no sight.

Tilly, who is the sweetest dog imaginable, is finding her situation very depressing. However, one of her adopted sisters Clemmie, who has been blind from birth, has been great. It has literally been a case of ‘the blind leading the blind’.

Schnauzerfest has been very supportive and we are very thankful for the help as no insurance would cover Tilly’s eye care.
